Meatable Hosts First-Ever Legally Approved Cultivated Meat Tasting in the European Union

In a significant development for the cultivated meat industry, Meatable, a leading food tech company, has successfully organized the first officially sanctioned cultivated meat tasting in the European Union. The tasking was held at its headquarters in Leiden, the Netherlands.

Tastings of cultivated meat are crucial for gathering essential feedback to refine products on their journey toward regulatory approval and eventual commercialization. Meatable’s tasting event followed approval from an independent Expert Committee sanctioned by the Dutch government, which reviewed extensive product safety data.

Among the distinguished guests who attended the tasting were Michelin-starred chef Ron Blaauw, Constantijn van Oranje, Prince of the Netherlands and Special Envoy, Techleap, and entrepreneur Ira van Eelen, daughter of Willem van Eelen, a pioneer in the cultivated meat field.

Krijn de Nood, Founder and CEO of Meatable, expressed his pride in the milestone achieved, stating, “We are incredibly proud to host the first official cultivated meat tasting in the European Union. Over the past five years, Meatable has been dedicated to developing a product that mirrors the taste, texture, and flavor profile of conventionally farmed meat. This tasting provides us with valuable insights to further optimize our product before its market release.”

Constantijn van Oranje, Special Envoy, Techleap, commended Meatable’s efforts, highlighting the potential of cultivated meat to reduce the environmental impact of the food industry. “Meatable’s cultivated meat holds tremendous promise for sustainability,” he remarked.

Ira van Eelen emphasized the importance of tastings in advancing the sector, stating, “Before cultured meat companies can proceed with regulatory submissions, it is imperative that their products undergo tasting to collect invaluable feedback for refinement.”

Since its inception in 2018, Meatable has been committed to creating environmentally conscious cultivated meat products on a large scale. Utilizing its proprietary Opti-OX™ technology, Meatable can produce cultivated meat at a significantly faster rate compared to traditional farming methods, thereby reducing production costs and environmental impact.

Meatable aims to introduce its products in Singapore this year, following approval from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Pending regulatory clearance, Meatable’s products will be available in select restaurants. Additionally, the company is preparing for its entry into the US market, aiming for 2025 pending regulatory approvals.
