Innovative Pest Control: New Approach to Target Termites

Researchers at UC Riverside have developed a novel method to effectively control western drywood termites by utilizing a natural pine scent, pinene, to attract them to a lethal dose of insecticide. Traditional treatments often required broad fumigation techniques, which have efficiency limitations and can pose environmental risks. In trials, the combination of pinene and insecticide increased mortality rates from about 70% to over 95%. This method not only improves efficacy but also reduces reliance on expensive and hazardous fumigation practices, thus offering a potentially safer and more economical solution for managing termite infestations in residential and commercial buildings.

The implications of this research could significantly shift pest management strategies in agricultural and urban settings. By enhancing targeted treatment methods and minimizing broad-spectrum chemical use, the approach contributes to sustainable pest control practices. This innovation may assist farmers and homeowners in protecting wooden structures while aligning with growing environmental standards.
