Nestlé lança garfo à base de plantas para o macarrão Maggi Cup Noodles na Índia

Nestlé has announced the release of a limited-edition plant-based fork for its Maggi cup noodles in India. Developed in collaboration with Trishula, a local startup, the two-piece edible fork is made from wheat flour and salt. This innovation, created by food science and packaging experts at Nestlé’s R&D center in India, maintains the desired functionality while preserving the nutritional values and taste of the noodles.

This initiative is part of Nestlé’s broader commitment to reduce or eliminate the use of plastics in its packaging. The company is also focusing on simplifying packaging materials, expanding reusable and refillable systems, and exploring alternative packaging options for various product categories.

Gerhard Niederreiter, Head of Nestlé’s Institute of Packaging Sciences, stated, “At Nestlé, we continuously explore different types of alternative sustainable packaging solutions that ensure food safety, consumer experience, and product taste and quality. In this case, our packaging experts developed a unique alternative fork that built on our scientific expertise across different kinds of food-grade packaging materials and shapes.”

Antonia Wanner, Group Head of ESG Strategy and Deployment, highlighted the importance of packaging innovations to Nestlé’s sustainability goals: “Reducing packaging and designing packaging for recycling are both key pillars to Nestlé’s sustainability commitments. Our teams are constantly exploring novel materials and cutting-edge technologies for packaging solutions that are convenient, protect the food inside, and are good for the planet.”

In addition to the edible fork, Nestlé’s packaging experts in R&D Nutrition and China are piloting a patented paper scoop for adult milk powders. This design, featuring a flat foldable scoop and a metal cap, eliminates the need for plastic in the packaging.

By 2021, Nestlé had replaced 4.5 billion plastic straws globally with paper straws. The company’s R&D teams continue to innovate with recyclable straws and non-plastic coatings for paper cups that can withstand hot beverages.
