Terradot Launches with $58.2 Million to Advance Carbon Removal through Enhanced Rock Weathering
Terradot, a company dedicated to advancing carbon removal through Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW), has officially launched with $58.2 million in funding and agreements to remove nearly 300,000 tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere. These agreements represent the largest volume of carbon removal contracted by any ERW company to date.
The funding includes $4.2 million in seed investments and a $54 million Series A round recently completed. Backers include prominent individuals such as John Doerr, Sheryl Sandberg, Tom Bernthal, and George Roberts, alongside major corporations like Google and Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund. Venture capital firms such as Kleiner Perkins and Floodgate also participated in the funding. Among its agreements, Terradot has secured a $27 million, 90,000-tonne purchase from Frontier buyers for delivery between 2025 and 2029, and an additional commitment from Google to remove 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ after 2029, marking the tech company’s largest single carbon removal purchase to date.
Founded in 2022 at Stanford University, Terradot aims to scale the natural process of rock weathering into a global solution for carbon sequestration. The company focuses on addressing critical challenges in ERW, including optimizing CO₂ uptake and developing precise measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) tools. These advancements are intended to enable ERW’s integration into agricultural and industrial systems worldwide, with the goal of achieving scalability within the next decade.
Terradot has already launched scaled pilot operations in Brazil, where conditions such as tropical soils, agricultural expertise, and a 93% clean electricity matrix provide an ideal setting for ERW. In collaboration with EMBRAPA Cerrados, Brazil’s leading agricultural research institution, Terradot is working to develop frameworks for scaling ERW projects across the country. Over the past year, the company has spread more than 48,000 tonnes of rock across 1,800 hectares of agricultural land, demonstrating promising results in tropical climates.
The company’s leadership team brings a wide range of expertise, including co-founders James Kanoff, Sasankh Munukutla, and Scott Fendorf, as well as Julia Marisa Sekula and Connor Sendel. Supported by a science team with extensive research experience and over 100,000 citations, Terradot is leveraging its collective knowledge to address the scientific and operational challenges of ERW.
